Canada paid for the bridge because it’s that important for their economy. They’re going to open it.

It’s more about getting truck traffic out of downtown Windsor, and a fuck you to the billionaire that owns the bridge in Detroit.

Planning for a new Windsor-Detroit crossing dates to the early 2000s, when Canadian and U.S. transportation agencies conducted cross-border traffic studies that found existing infrastructure would not meet future demand.

        The ambassador bridge isn’t downtown.

Canada paid for half the bridge, the US still owes their half and it won’t open until they pay, because no one trusts USA any more.

Since completion, the Ambassador bridge toll mysteriously lowered by half.

What kind of shithole lets a private company own critical economic infrastructure?

Canada is paying the full upfront cost of the Gordie Howe International Bridge because of a binational deal reached after years of studies, legal battles and political resistance on the U.S. side of the border.

Under the 2012 Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement, Canada agreed to finance, build and operate the new Windsor-Detroit crossing, including portions on the American side, to move the long-delayed project forward.

I vaguely remember that one of the things Trump got upset about was that the Canadians were going to keep most of the tolls. That didn’t even go away when they explained to him that the bridge had been mostly paid by Canada. It was still unfair, according to (my vague recollection of) him.

His sense of fairness is roughly equivalent to a kindergartner, which is basically, “Anything that makes me unhappy is unfair.”

What is global news?

Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn’t have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

Post guidelines

Title format

Post title should mirror the news source title. If you don’t like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.

URL format

Post URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.

[Opinion] prefix

Opinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn’t explictly endorse.

Country prefix

Country prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn’t clearly mention the country.
