They should refuse to open the Canadian side of the bridge
Canada paid for the bridge because it’s that important for their economy. They’re going to open it.
It’s more about getting truck traffic out of downtown Windsor, and a fuck you to the billionaire that owns the bridge in Detroit.
Planning for a new Windsor-Detroit crossing dates to the early 2000s, when Canadian and U.S. transportation agencies conducted cross-border traffic studies that found existing infrastructure would not meet future demand.
The ambassador bridge isn’t downtown.
Canada paid for half the bridge, the US still owes their half and it won’t open until they pay, because no one trusts USA any more.
Since completion, the Ambassador bridge toll mysteriously lowered by half.
What kind of shithole lets a private company own critical economic infrastructure?
Canada is paying the full upfront cost of the Gordie Howe International Bridge because of a binational deal reached after years of studies, legal battles and political resistance on the U.S. side of the border.
Under the 2012 Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement, Canada agreed to finance, build and operate the new Windsor-Detroit crossing, including portions on the American side, to move the long-delayed project forward.
I vaguely remember that one of the things Trump got upset about was that the Canadians were going to keep most of the tolls. That didn’t even go away when they explained to him that the bridge had been mostly paid by Canada. It was still unfair, according to (my vague recollection of) him.
His sense of fairness is roughly equivalent to a kindergartner, which is basically, “Anything that makes me unhappy is unfair.”
nah, the bridge has purpose, as I understand it. let it quietly do its job
Seriously, what’s Trump’s obsession with tariffs? I know he’s a belligerent asshole, but why tariffs? This idiot almost certainly doesn’t even know what they are and i doubt anyone in his circle cared enough about them to put the obsession in his head. Maybe it’s just a half remembered section he kept from college.
because he’s poorly educated, has no sense of how to run the economy of a country. His fan base thinks he’s punishing other countries with a tax they pay. The whole country has lead poisoning.
His Pops probably had some tarrif scam where he made huge bank. Young Donny has vague memories of his father waxing nostalgic for tariffs.
Trump is an incurious idiot, there is no rational explanation of why he is obsessed with tariffs he has simply become convinced they work magic.
That dementia-ridden stroke-damaged brain is an enigma to everyone, including the man himself. Maybe some economist in 1986 said it to him 50 times in a single meeting.
Its something he can get away with, even if temporarily, to cause chaos and make bank with insider trading. The courts are too slow.
This fucking bridge is never opening
