Thousands of visitors were told to evacuate a remote Minnesota wilderness area accessible only by boat as wildfires send dangerously heavy smoke over the U.S. Midwest and Northeast this week.
More than 100 wildfires are burning in Canada and winds are carrying the smoke southeast. Warnings about unhealthy air conditions Wednesday extended from Minnesota through Toronto and into New York. Unusually hot summer temperatures were expected, too.
The best advice is to stay indoors to avoid both the smoke and the extreme heat, said Tyler Hasenstein, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
“Those two things coinciding with each other is not good from a health perspective,” he said.
I live in Toronto and for the past couple days it’s just thick of the smell of like charcoal. On Tuesday it was hot as fuck at like 40C degrees and the only “nice” thing about this smoke was that it cooled things down massively yesterday. but today even at 20C this morning it feels hot and EVERYTHING just smells of smoke, even inside now. I can literally taste Northern Ontario and I used to live there.
To people under the age of 25…this isn’t normal. I NEVER experienced this when I was a kid.
Throwback to this hellscape during covid. Welcome to smoke season, East Coast.

East coast had this as well a few years ago for the same reason as now which was huge fires in Canada. It is crazy since this has never happened in my entire life and now its twice in 2 years. Today was pretty bad were I live, but still not close to it was a few years ago but its going to be here until Friday so theres still time.
let’s build some more data centers.
It’s a season on the west coast (August- September in Washington). 150+ is not uncommon. My car apohlstery will smell of campfire. If the east coast experienced this, it would have been treated much more seriously.

Mid
eastwestAQI hit 133 today, the entire day looked like a sunset. I was in Rhode Island.
Ours is 439 in Milwaukee. The weirdest part is that it smells like burning plastic. The ai says it’s because the smoke has traveled further and had more time to break down in the uv light. I don’t really buy it though, I think a lot of plastic is burning somewhere
Wait. Isn’t 133 just “poor”? I thought unhealthy started at 150 and severe starts at 200. I mean, it’s smokey, but it could be way worse.
