yeah especially with archinstall. now installing arch is a cakewalk. Void is probably harder to install than Arch.

Technology@lemmy.world•IANA's email about why example.com changed | Oliver DunkEnglish
41·6 days agoprobably a hell of a lot. I do a lot of travelling for work and thus I’m always connecting to open wifi spots (with a vpn naturally) and many times my browser won’t pick up the capture portal automatically so I use example.com or neverssl.com to trigger the capture portal. It’s also the site I use to a very quick/dirty internet test.
I imagine most people use it the same way.

They’ll allow themselves to become Nazi’s because it’s an inconvenience for them otherwise.

1812·7 days agoyup, americans you’re all nazis. I don’t care anymore. you’ve aligned yourselves with another dictator for some diesel that likely won’t show up.
I absolutely LOVE how prior to all this trump bullshit americans were all about their 2A rights but now? crickets. the whole “don’t tread on me” thing which ends up was actually bullshit. you’re a bunch of cowards. I don’t care anymore, i’m done holding my tongue. I’m sick and tired and living above a bunch of nazis.
“what do you expect us to do?” nothing. I hoped you’d have done something, ANYTHING, by now. “we have the midterms!” yeah you think this clown is going to actually allow you to gain power via voting? grow up. take back your country.

61·7 days agoyour country isn’t making itself a pariah, it is a pariah.
americans need to stop saying “we’re making ourselves…” or “we’re turning into…” or “this is going to happen…” you already have made yourselves, you already have turned into, it already happened. You’re a fascist country and the rest of the world views you as an evil nation. I mean hell you’re currently encouraging provinces in my country to separate. you’re actively making several attempts to weaken us.
The sooner americans FINALLY acknowledge the fact that “hey, we’re nazis” the better. But I’m absolutely tired of you guys refusing to admit you lost the plot and i’m VERY tired of americans constantly trying to apologize for their country. that ship has sailed a long time ago. you “elected” this clown twice and even that is questionable and you didn’t do anything about it. And before people come in here and say “what do you expect us to do?” stop saying sorry if you can’t do anything to rectify the situation.

23·8 days agoI mean if it were me and I knew I was going be killed for years and then the day comes and it doesn’t go to plan I’d be pissed as well. I would have had time to prepare for my fate, to accept it, and then days later wake up in a hospital bed cause they fucked it up? yeah man, that would rightly piss me off. So what now? they try again? just keep her in prison for the rest of her life instead? I don’t condone her crimes but she’s got every right to be pissed like you said.

Linux@lemmy.world•KDE Developer talks about whats good and bad from System76's Cosmic DEEnglish
10·9 days agoI tried Cosmic 1.9 on NixOS the other day. it’s fine. The tiling toggle is very nice (always has been in all honesty) and is probably the key motivation to use it. sure you can tile in KDE or GNOME but it’s janky on both regardless of which method you use. And setting up predesignated tiling spaces on KDE for each workspace is annoying but it’s understandable.
Cosmic does have a lack of theme options similar to GNOME but in a way that makes sense due to GTK/QT applications. There’s really no point in trying to go ham on customizing the look of Cosmic as it’s going to look like a mess regardless.
It has the typical Wayland quirks/bugs. Keyboard focus is still a mess on wayland so it’s not really the fault of System76 (even though KDE has managed to pretty much solve that issue). the cosmic file manager is decent, the terminal is crap, the text editor there’s no point. their app store works fine.
If you want a very simple DE that is fairly stable and has by far the best tiling option on any DE currently available then you can’t go wrong with Cosmic. it works. it’s simple. it pretty much stays out of your way. it’s not flashy it just gets the job done. If you’re someone who loves Vim style navigation then you’ll adore cosmic as all the keybind defaults are essentially Vim. when I used it I didn’t have to change any keybinds which is VERY nice. I like it.
I use the dendritic approach for my NixOS configuration. put everything in individual modules. then I go back and further cut up those modules to be even more specific. It’s gotten so bad I even have modules for almost every individual WM/DE to just turn them on and off within the flake. They’re just so fun to build. it’s addictive. I need help.
man as a NixOS user i’m too busy perfecting my configuration to care about what other users are doing.
It. Is. Never. Perfect.
DOOM Emacs ruined me. I love it.

Linux@lemmy.world•COSMIC Desktop 1.9 Adds COSMIC Viewer, On-Screen KeyboardEnglish
2·10 days agoyeah I tried it with a VM and a few games. it was worse for the games. had to toggle between workspaces a couple times for the game to pick up the keyboard again.
I think this is more a wayland issue than a cosmic one. I sometimes get this issue on Niri or Hyprland, rarely on Sway (but it does happen) and also even more rarely on KDE but again, it has happened.
Anything X11? never.

Technology@lemmy.world•Gen Z is officially less intelligent than millennials, first recorded intergenerational IQ dropEnglish
2·10 days agoThe thing with us Millennials is we had to learn like multiple generations worth of stuff and then proceed to not only teach the older generation what we learned but also the younger generations. So naturally there are gaps.
It didn’t include us because we taught ourselves a lot of things because we had to, there was no one teaching us these things. We went from living in the early 80s and having dial up phones, tvs with maybe 3 channels, and for the vast majority of us no access to a computer. then suddenly we transition to cable tv, computers, cell phones, the internet, how to use the internet, how to build websites for the internet, how to communicate with others on the internet, online gaming, smart phones, how to use smart phones, high speed internet, CRT tvs to Plasma to HD, Beta to VHS to Laser discs to DVDs to bluray. having access to very little information to suddenly having access to all the information.
We had to learn how to use ALL this stuff and then teach Gen X and older how to use it followed up by Gen Z and younger. and that’s just the technology. that’s not including all the massive changes to society that happened during our formative years.
The younger generations don’t have any of these massive leaps because it’s all kind of stagnated or regressed. They’re not “forced” to learn anything new to use it or navigate it because we already did that for them. Gen Z doesn’t have to create content like we did, it’s all provided for them and most of it is of poor quality. Our content creation consisted of building our own websites, PHP forums, IRC rooms, building our own social networks, chatrooms, games, etc. They don’t have to do this.
And as far as education it’s the same deal. Remember we were told that we had to learn all this math because we’d never be able to “carry around a calculator with us at all times”. or we had to learn cursive because “that’s how everyone writes”. or that we MUST go to college because THAT’S the only way to get a job. Again because of the technology we built Gen Z and younger doesn’t need any of that, they don’t need to learn it and they’re not learning it.
At the end of the day we thought we’d be making their lives easier with what we HAD to learn but in turn, we’ve made their lives harder because we didn’t tell them WHY we had to learn it. we just handed it all to them and said “good luck.”

2·12 days ago-
Audio is always an issue. I still have issues with Audio on some distros. like on Void I couldn’t get audio working at all to save my life. Try a different distro like Fedora or Debian if you want it to work out of the box. if you’re looking for a gaming focused distro like CachyOS try PikaOS which is a fork of Debian. by far one of the quickest and most straight forward installs i’ve ever experienced.
-
you don’t have to use Wayland, I don’t. I can’t stand wayland. I use X11 with Picom. I use DWM cause it just works. if you want a desktop environment then use XFCE4. that just works and is very light weight.
But honestly at the end of the day if Windows works for you and still works for you then just stick with it. Don’t listen to the people who say “wah wah windows bad” it doesn’t matter. Use whatever works. I mean I use every OS on various machines because I honestly enjoy playing around with Operating Systems. I use Linux, BSD, Windows, MacOS on various machines. there’s no perfect OS out there and I’ve used them all. just use what works for you and your hardware.
