An American oil company connected to Donald Trump is preparing to sink wells in remote Greenland despite not having received permission from the local authorities.
As the US president renews his threats to claim the vast Arctic territory, materials to prepare for drilling were brought ashore in recent days on Greenland’s eastern coast.
That has prompted Greenland’s government to issue a “strong warning” that no approval had been granted to land the kit. “All future logistical matters must be advised and approved by the mineral resources authority – before they are carried out,” the government said in a statement.
Two days later, Trump made his latest menacing post on Truth Social, showing himself looming over a Greenlandic village.
Does Greenland have no capacity to seize the equipment?
There are about 500 people living in the vicinity of the proposed oil wells, and it is 800km from the next nearest town of 250 people.
It is extremely isolated. The entirety of Iceland is closer to the area than 90% of Greenland’s population.
I am not saying that a group of motivated and local Greenlanders could not make their way up and boot them out, but the regional and national apparatus is not designed for this kind of action.
I would actually say Iceland’s police force and coast guard would be able to do more here than Greenland.
Denmark and the European NATO countries can very easily deal with this though.
So, Trump is going Putin on Greenland and no one is going to stop him.
I don’t want to hear another fucking word on soft, unarmed Americans who are more likely to stay at home out of fear of talking to another person in society not personally removing him, somehow, when the people with fucking armies won’t remove some crates of equipment and maybe park a couple war boats on the coast as a loaner “coast guard”.
I’d imagine that kind of isolated makes bombs less of a chaotic risk and you only need one or two Icelanders to agree with me.
