I don’t want to tell adults how to live their lives but adding immigration/citizenship to this dynamic certainly makes it seem more gross.

Surely once someone is 40 they can choose to do whatever the fuck they want provided it’s not harming anyone.
Mail order brides are often abused in a myriad of ways, I don’t wish to describe, both before and after they get to their destination.
That’s certainly true, but my point is that the risks are dramatically diminished when the younger spouse is over 40.
There’s every likelihood that being referred to, and categorised as, a “mail order bride” is more harmful to her prospects than her relationship is.
