Being a doctor is one of the jobs expected to be least at risk from AI replacement. But a new program launched in Utah is raising questions over that assumption. A healthcare startup will begin offering AI examinations and prescriptions to patients without direct human oversight, making Utah the first state to replace a doctor with an AI.
The good news is that the program is currently very limited in its scope. It’s just one year long and only for patients with mild-to-moderate acne.
The process works when a person signs up for Nolla Health’s $4.99-per-month app and uses it to scan their face. After completing a medical history and personal information form, the AI analyzes their skin, identifies the acne problem, rates the skin’s oiliness, and then generates a numerical acne severity score that ranges between clear skin and severe acne, reports Bloomberg.

People are going to die I guarantee it
I don’t think they’re going to die since it’s only for acne. But to be fair, that headline is atrocious and meant to click bait everyone.
But hospital execs are gonna go “see it worked for acne, let’s try other stuff.”
I have my doubts it will work for acne. But, this is the plan.
I have my doubts too but that hasn’t stopped executives from making the AI sound more impressive than it actually is and pushing forward with implementing AI where it definitely should not go.
☝️ This.
There are acne medications that are extremely dangerous. IDK if this clanker would be allowed to prescribe accutane, but that’s something that absolutely requires careful monitoring.
Yeah Accutane requires regular blood tests to make sure it’s not killing you. Probably not great to prescribe without a real doctor.
There’s also that pesky black box warning about how it increases the risk of suicidal ideation.
I can absolutely imagine this ignoring a carcinoma that no human doctor would have.
It’s for acne, for now.
Sterility then? Acne drugs are well known to impact fertility
you have a broken leg, the AI prescribes several opiods, and chemo drugs for you. take twice a day for 2 weeks.
or it gets the care wrong, you have broken leg" remove left kidney."
Undertaker lobby: “This is good for business.”
Death is great for the insurance industry, people dying of easily treated, but expensive procedures will equal bigger bonuses and high yields for investors.
Utah is largely Republican.
mormon republican too. dont worry they want a gigantic AI DATANCENTER in utah to provide all the processes for the AI.
Please proceed
Somebody only read the headline and jumped straight to comments.
Sadly, I think you’re right.
Doctors are so bad here, i bet as first contact AI performs better than those self prescribing money sucking meth junkies in white.
Just ask your average pharmacist who cross checks prescriptions.
Wait till they take away pharmacist saying as AI doesn’t do any mistake we don’t need anyone to check. Cost saving to the max, no overhead.
People are gonna scam to get prescriptions they shouldn’t
