Your initial take is not completely wrong though, democrats are a right wing party from a leftist perspective.
Republicans are openly racist, they believe in hierarchy based on race. Democrats of today aren’t so racist, but both parties are classist. They believe in hierarchy of class, if you’re rich enough you deserve healthcare and housing and good education and clean drinking water, and and and. If you’re poor, they’ll use you as a talking point, but they’ll do whatever it takes to make it as difficult as possible to move up between classes.
