What’s with the recent trend of screenshotting someone’s post on [social media of choice] and then superposing on a random ass image? Is the woman in the background in the car supposed to mean anything? Is this the same person that made the original post? Did she edit it like this?
I am not blaming OP here since I’m sure they just found it and posted it here, but I’m questioning why it became a thing.
Someone else said it’s an Instagram thing, they have to be in square format. So I’m gonna assume OP is getting these from there.
LadyButterfly posts these all the time and I’ve been curious as well. I haven’t noticed anyone else doing it, but I don’t usually check posters’ names.
I like the one where angels come to earth to visit Lot (our hero of the story) and take the form of men. But because they’re angels, they’re like, super hot. So all the gays in the village want a piece of that fine angel tush. They bang on Lot’s door asking for their Snap and Lot (our noble protagonist) is a reasonable man so he suggests the gay men all rape his virgin daughter instead. But they refuse obviously so God has to blow up the whole village.
Fun fact this is where the “cool guys don’t look at explosions” trope comes from because Lot and his wife are walking away from the nuked village but she turns round to look and God has to turn her into salt.
In the third act, Lot’s daughters are upset that their boyfriends got caught up in the village nuke so they have to rape their dad while he’s drunk and then they all live happily ever after.
The jewish teaching of this is a little different. See, in Sodom, they were wealthy and only wanted to associate with the wealthy. Poverty was criminalized, and charity doubly so— and by criminalized, I mean that beggars and charity seekers were to be systematically punished with ritualized gang rape before being cast out of the walls.
So, like you said, some angels come to visit Lot, and he invites them into his home and gives them a meal. The neighborhood gets wind of this, realizing that his guests are not foreign CEOs come to make a business deal but rather some dudes without money that are getting some sweet charity— “stealing” from the city’s prosperity. Lot comes out and is like, don’t you dare touch these guys, take my family instead, and the crowd is like, “no way, you guys are loaded and help make our city rich. Give us these fucking poors so we can humiliate them and run ‘em out of town, we have no desire to run you (and your money) out of town. Step aside!”
Bit of a different take, with a bit of a different message. Now, what were the angels there for?
Well, god was talkig to Abraham and saying, “hey, Sodom is a such a blight on the landscape for their sheer greed that I’m going to wipe it off the face of the earth” and Abraham is like, “hey, there’s gotta be SOME good people there, right? Like at least ten?” And god said if they could find ten good people left in the city it wouldn’t be destroyed. So the angels show up, and basically the entire city is there on the doorstep trying to legally gang rape them for the crime of not being rich. So the city gets nuked.
I don’t know why Hollywood still hasn’t made it into a movie even though they made the boring boat story.
Better than Game of Thrones season 8
Remember, it’s all “metaphorical” until they can use it to justify hate.
I guess it was for the best to blow this village up. God was still practicing there.
Yea that is a good one
My favourite bible verse is when Jesus encourages his followers to cut down Flock cameras.
Somebody should ask the disciples what good ol JC felt about homosexuality.
The best bible verse is the one where god sends bears to murder children for making fun of a bald man.
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
Mathew 5:6
Fuck anyone who advertises their Christianity.
I was laughing because I thought you meant this: ❌
TIL there are religious emoji. That’s crazy. Is there a rule of how big a religion has to be before they get an emoji?
I actually just learned about the “Elephant Test” recently. Apparently the Unicode Consortium compares a suggested emoji to an elephant when considering notability; only something that’s about as well-known as an elephant passes the test. So I think the religion has to be as well-known as an elephant to get an emoji, which feels like a fever dream of a sentence to type.
possibility of a man being pregnant🫄 is as well known as an elephant 🐘then lmao
Ketchup emoji when?
That actually sounds like a good test.
Question is, is there an elephant Unicode character?
Ol’ big ears African elephant stealing the thunder…
You could argue that some of the designs are of Asian elephants: https://emojipedia.org/elephant#designs
Hey, I also listened to that podcast episode today.
Tap for spoiler
It’s Lateral with Tom Scott
You seem like a guy who would know a lot about emoji notability.
Fellow Tom Scott “Lateral” fan, eh? :)
I was honestly not expecting to be called out on this, let alone twice! Well, I guess I shouldn’t be terribly surprised that thinky nerds on Lemmy listen to a thinky nerd podcast hosted by a thinky nerd.
they literally have my religion 69ing ♋️
unfortunately I am currently non-practicing😎😎😎
I got curious and tried to look up all the different religious emojis. After Judaism (with 14.8 million Jewish people per Wikipedia), from what I can tell the next smallest religion with an emoji is Sikhism, with the khanda: 🪯 Wikipedia says there are 25-30 million Sikhs, so I guess somewhere between ~15 and 25 million? Big hurdle for an upstart religion to overcome.
Although that doesn’t seem to have helped the Mormons, who have ~17 million followers. But I also don’t know of any special symbols they have outside ones shared by other Christians (like crosses).
There’s already a hat emoji.
If they could read, their favorite bible verse would be when two people from different tribes fuck and some other dude spears them both.
Wait, that would not go well for the couch fucker, would it?
The craziest one to me was always the KKK and other white supremacy groups putting up crosses in black folks yards and setting them on fire.
Historically (and today) those racist groups consider themselves Christian. The obvious part we focus on about that is usually that the entire message of Jesus was about loving everyone despite your differences… but they’re also literally threatening people with the thing their supposed savor was nailed to for having a different skin color, and burning their own religious symbol.
It’s such a layered and severe example of missing the point in every possible way that if I didn’t know it was historical fact I’d read it as sarcastic hyperbole.
But that was Saulus/Paulus, not Jesus
To be gay is to sin my brother in Christ ❌
Todos, Todos, Todos.
In fact, according to the Bible Jesus told his followers to go a bit further than merely berating gays:
Matthew 5:17
17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.19Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
I feel there’s a loophole in that last sentence. The average persons righteousness has surpassed the Pharisees and teachers of the law. Definitely in modern times, they just got more corrupt.
That’s a fair point, I also would definitely consider myself more “righteous” than some slave-driving barbarians. I’m not sure that’s what Jesus (allegedly) had in mind though.
It’s actually an interesting chapter, in the same verses Jesus tells people to be forgiving, love your enemies and turn the other cheek (while in the verses cited above seemingly endorsing the orgy of violence, oppression, retribution and murder that is Old Testament law), and also that a woman who wants to divorce a man who repeatedly rapes and abuses her will burn in hell.
