That is not even correct anymore. China is nowadays in the lead on battery technology in specific and EVs in general anxx dc that lead is home made. The West simply did not care about battery technology that much, as it was considered a low return business. You can’t copy that much anymore if you are the technology leader yourself. China is also increasingly outresearching the rest in other fields.

I am not saying that China isn’t still copying elsewhere where it isn’t technology leader. The US and Japan have historically done the same.

PS: Regarding LLMs, no tears for thiefs being stolen from btw.

The US and Japan have historically done the same.

See also Germany. Britain required stuff produced in Germany be marked „Made in Germany“, because many imported goods had the marks of British manufacturing and were of poor quality.

Yes, that was not an exhaustive list. Both, Germany and Britain are on it too. Any developed country is.

Paying tribute is an old story.

From Chinas perspective, they’re building stuff we can’t. We gave them step one, they solved step two and are ready for three. It really does appear to work like that. Capital expenditure just is different. We tend to use that as internal control rather than problem solving. Which is where the rub is.

From Chinas perspective the US needs to adjust and from the US perspective Russian gas is too cheap.

The cost of the disagreement has real potential to starve a tremendous amount of people and cause horrific generational damage to a lot nations.

      lol @ homemade

The last few years maybe. The catchup was definitely not homemade. Just a decade ago they were still stealing western IP for EV tech. Why do you think Tesla was so highly protected by China that if a malfunctioning Tesla killed your family and you talked about it, YOU had to pay TESLA? Not because China wanted everyone to drive Teslas, they needed Tesla manufacturing there to figure out the very few things Tesla actually did well: Battery management, infotainment and drivetrain. Why do you think every chinese EV looks like a Tesla inside, with a giant tablet smack dab in the middle of the interior

Anyone with a brain has known for a long time now that anything you have built in China, you de facto lose the rights to, Chinese companies will copy it and copyright, patents, etc, don’t apply to them. In the last few years, it also involves them improving on your design, but that has not always been the case.
