I teach scuba and underwater photography at a major university as a side gig. I have dozens of former students with advanced degrees in aquatic biology who now work in retail.

At least in my experience of a handful of folks in Marine Biology research… every single one of them. Working low/minimal wage work isn’t so bad if your folks are loaded and you’ll just inherent their wealth. It’s just a waiting game.
There’s much more interest in science than there are careers in it.
