Yeah! Let’s get rid of ALL data centers! That way, there won’t be any Internet at all!

You do realize that if it weren’t for data centers, you wouldn’t be reading this message or posting to Lemmy, right?

Your local instance might be hosted on some Raspberry Pi somewhere, but your Internet connection itself is going through data centers and relies on data centers all over the world to work.

You wouldn’t even have a working cell phone without data centers.

Ugh. This is the law of unintended consequences in action.

Instead of building large, vastly more efficient data centers, companies will build smaller ones and spread them out over a geographical area that all use the same power provider (so they can save an equivalent amount of money on bulk use). Resulting in more power draw, more land use, and will require more infrastructure.

The only solution to the problem of data center power utilization is to mandate they be powered by renewables.

This is a real dick move.

Trump has insisted the executive order is aimed at combatting “birth tourism,” immigrants who come to the United States briefly for the purpose of having a child.

This assumes that birth tourism—if it even exists in any non-trivial amount of babies—is a problem. Why would it be a problem? I don’t get it.

The administration is always bitching about not enough babies… Make up your damned mind!
