The bottom is finally starting to fall out for OpenAI. Sam has to be so desperate to try things like this. He should be prosecuted for all the stolen data he’s already stolen and the lies he’s told investors. Of course it has to be a tech giant to levy any kind of meaningful penalty. Quite sure Apple would like a piece of the ownership pie despite the likely coming collapse. They have so much cash it does not pose much of a risk.

Piracy is a responsible, meaningful response to ongoing investor-driven enshittification. Investors are hell bent on reverse robin hooding the economy and they’ll keep at it until it’s no longer profitable to do so…

Any press is good press as the saying goes. Big names drive more clicks for personalized ads. Continuing the conversation keeps them relevant, and they can certainly afford to get continuing coverage. The media loves headlines that frame the wealthy as victims of unfortunate circumstance - oh it’s just the market or it’s the weather, the economy shifted etc… In this case the headline reads like xbox is a victim and is responding rationally - rather than this being a predictable consequence of their own shitty actions. So it’s also branding for them.

The reasons are shitty too, but they’re still valid.
