The headline makes it sound as if this was a new development, or as if that’s about all the tracking Amazon does. Neither is true.
Several people in the past decade have investigated what exactly Amazon has on you by asking for their private data.
That said, this really could be news to Verge readers, esp. those that are unable to look for news sources outside the USA’s borders.

Yeah I fucking hate that term. And it seems only MAGA and the Kreml use it in earnest these days.

tl;dr: it’s about the timezone database (edit: among other projects) which is “maintained by a group of volunteers. Originally founded by Arthur David Olson, the project is now led by Paul Eggert and Tim Parenti.”
I know that this usually comes down to one person doing a lion’s share of the work. This applies to so many FOSS pojects, especially when their impact bleeds over into the non-FOSS world (and by now I think we can include Android in that). Yet the world of FOSS has never broken down even when one of these "one person"s quits. We know. But it might be scawy for people who live in proprietary la-la-land.
Don’t get me wrong, this is important. But I find the article with all its dark javascript magic a little hyperbolic, sensationalist. Even the “plain” reading page is. Gigantic headers, large numbers etc.
I will also add that the tz database isn’t huge, and it isn’t prone to constant change. It makes for great numbers but the whole issue is pretty pedestrian if you look a little closer.
How many parts of closed systems that many people rely on are maintained by only 1 person (who would promptly be replaced by corporate if they quit)? I guess we just don’t have so much data on that because - surprise - they’re not Open.
I could’ve written a similar article, but I would have written it differently.
edit: I stand corrected on the crossed-out bit.
I’ll also state very clearly that I agree with the topic, just not the way it is presented.
And that I was fully aware that this is not only about the TZ databse when I wrote this.
Yes, we want to know how the sausage is made, just like with all FOSS.
what does the community actually expect from devs
Don’t flood the zone.
It really isn’t so long ago when making an app required various stages of completion and testing, usually including other people. I expect from devs that they follow that well-established road and stop with the silly “who has the time” argument I’m hearing so often lately. Sorry, you didn’t actually say that.
Not sure why we should be interested in the Polish though. Are you from there?

🤔 what happened to Enlightened Centrism / Both Sides btw?
There were whole subs that professed to be earnest about it, and others that ridiculed it.
But being openly nazi is perfectly fine nowadays, there’s no reason to obfuscate one’s true opinions anymore.

Countless statements to that effect. MAGA will end itself. 🎉
… or so I hope.
Which kinda reflects on how widespread that shit is.
But yeah, rarely anybody even remembers anymore how many Epsteins there are in this world. I recently wanted to make a joke about the authors of The Expanse not knowing how their hyperdrive works, what was it called again … oh yeah, the Epstein Drive … I decided to drop the joke.
That name is going to go the way of the Hitler I guess.

This is 100% real estate agent lingo.

This has been the mainstream assumption for years by now.
Also I just realized that

Somehow it’s too slow and too fast.
Humanity steers like an ocean liner.

Not only Swiss.

Tax is not a punishment.
Are you replying to the wrong person? I specifically pointed out that they were thinking about something else.

autonomous drones
They really thought that sounds like a plus

Hardly. If the alcohol tax on a bottle of wine is €5 and the bottle is sold for €10, that’s a pretty steep price. If the bottle is sold for €100 or even more, it’s nothing.
But I understand that you were probably thinking about companies calculating spending & sales.

Even the countries that do this employ all sorts of edge case rules not to make it too fair.
Well, at least my country does. One of those famous Northern European “Socialist” countries.

TBF: both rich and poor people pay luxury tax (tobacco, alcohol etc.) - but such taxes always affect low income people more.
