I actually think of this often, if more and more people self host and go to Linux etc the big bois are gonna crack down and make it illegal, or infiltrate distros and repos with bad actors.

Yeah the freedom to vote with your wallet in a capitalist market is just an illusion. You have no choice but to do what they say and I don’t think we can self-host and open-source our way out of it. Needs systemic change.
Or … they’ll just buy up all the hardware (including all production capacity for future hardware), making it prohibitively expensive for people to buy their own hardware.

That and try to pass laws forbidding the continued usage of older computers, since a lot of older tech can still work with Linux well enough.
