Of course it was a stupid idea. Everyone outside of MS marketing department knew that as soon as we heard about the idea.
I’d bet a lot of the people inside the marketing department knew it was stupid also but their job is to try to sell whatever the big bosses want them to.
Copilot key outdated? Just buy a new laptop!
I have to do this on new systems now just to get a Ctrl key back…
Here are the steps I did to remap “copilot key” to right control in Ubuntu 22.04.
- Install keyd from ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:keyd-team/ppasudo apt updatesudo apt install keyd
- Create default config file,
/etc/keyd/default.conf, with contents
[ids]
[main]
leftshift+leftmeta+f23 = rightcontrol
- Reload config:
sudo keyd reloadorsudo systemctl restart keyd- I had to reboot in this step because a lock file was blocking
keydto reload.

(For
keydinstalled via PPA, the binary may be calledkeyd.rvaiya, but the systemd unit is alwayskeyd.)- Install keyd from ppa
Most of the market flat-out won’t notice. The few that notice are probably split between don’t care and having the newest logo be conspicuous consumption, same as the windows key.
But I use that ctrl key
Fair. I was mostly talking about the logo change, not so much the general “let’s remap a key”.
