August 3rd is the deadline after which it’s officially too late for a special election to replace him before the next regular election.

How does having a corpse representing Kentucky be better? Can the GOP keep control of his vote?

They’re scared a real candidate will do their job competently, so they would rather have a dead man representing them. Ya know, just republicans trying to obstruct democracy as per usual (somehow, this is all been normalized in the USA)

Someone on Lemmy said that using his death to mislead the public, stymie democracy and play procedural shenanigans against the Democrats is definitely how he would have wanted to go.

I do want to clarify as a Kentuckian, we do not want a dead man representing us. The republican party officials don’t want someone else. Most of Kentucky Dems and reps are getting pissed that he’s basically been pulling a “Weekend at Bernie’s” for 40+ days. It’s likely even with a special election that another Republican would still get elected. But people are still pissed this farce is happening

Rather before the deadline, the Governor would get to appoint a caretaker to the seat.

Thanks, and I assume the upcoming mid terms are not a “regular election” in this context - it’s the voting round in 2 years ?

Or are they really that determined to hold the seat for an extra month or so ? Mid terms are Nov right ? And a special election would be at least a couple of months from death to the replacement poll ?

Yeah. The thing is that Thomas Massie would be amongst the favorites and they will stop at nothing to keep him away from any power.

The way I understand it, which is vaguely, Massie already lost the primary or something so he can’t run in the regular election. But he could run in a special election, which would divide the republican base and help a democrat to win.

It is convoluted though, and beyond my limited comprehension of political complexities. Republicans tend to be very underhanded like this though, so republican-controlled states have convoluted laws which enable them to do these kinds of shenanigans.

In their opinion, it clearly is.

I guess they have some really nefarious stuff they wish to force through before possibly losing the majority and don’t think Massey would go for it.

Before Aug 3 there would have been a special election to replace him. After Aug 3 it’s only 3 months to the midterms so there’s a local law there that it gets rolled up with the midterms.
