My work vehicle is a 2024 model and has a whip antenna! But it is a larger truck and aerodynamics probably were not a main factor.
They were easy to break as well. It was a good evolution.
They started embedding them into the back windows of cars in the mid-1990s! It’s usually kind of a zig-zag toward the top.
