Washington (United States) (AFP) – The United States on Monday announced a sweeping campaign against the International Criminal Court (ICC) that could include further sanctions and other measures, accusing it of posing “an intolerable threat to US sovereignty.”
The Trump administration said it would pressure other countries to withdraw from the court, marking a sharp escalation in the US effort to isolate the Hague-based institution and starve it of political and financial support.
“The ICC and its friends are waging a war against our country, not with bullets or missiles, but with statutes, compacts and the force of so-called international law,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a video statement.
The State Department said in a statement that the campaign will “systematically disable the ICC’s ability to operate, target American servicemen or officials, or otherwise threaten American sovereignty.”
The US has previously targeted individual court officials it deems a threat to US interests, but the new “whole of government” campaign will pressure other nations “to withdraw from the ICC and cut off any financial support to the court,” a State Department official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

If the ICC is a credible threat to your citizens, that says more about the citizens than the ICC.
“The ICC and it’s friends” includes pretty much everyone except the current Republican administration and their oligarch friends.
And other criminals globally, of course.
The people most upset about the ICC and the UN are usually from Israel, America (both as a sockpuppet of Israel and for our own reasons), or the former Yugoslav states.
All for the same reasons:
- They’ve committed war crimes and crimes against humanity
- They aspire to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity
- They support their governments in committing war crimes and crimes against humanity
To compare it to criminals hating cops is an injustice. These aren’t guys selling dope or boosting cars, they’re vicious butchers of men clearly signalling their intent.
ICC never threatened me.

The only force of international law the Trump administration cares about is gunboat diplomacy, supplemented by an unhealthy appetite for bribery and corruption.
“the force of so-called international law” buddy you don’t just get to pretend like human rights don’t exist when your buddies violate them. It’s fucking insane to me that these criminals get to portray themselves as the party of law and order, but that’s what you get when you don’t educate your citizens.

Can’t the US just withdraw from the ICC and then the ICC wouldn’t be able to do anything about them?
I also don’t really see what the ICC could actually do. Do they have enforcers? If an American doesn’t show up to The Hague can the ICC send someone to take them there by force? I just don’t see how the ICC could have any authority over a super power like the US. If they did, Putin would have been drawn and quartered ages ago.
he could withdraw the us from the icc but if america gets its act together they can rejoin and hand over a war criminal as penance. like someone who has ordered arbritraty invasions and piracy and such.
so the administration sees some americans as needing to go in front of that court in the near future.
