Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla’s Cybercab has been deployed, and it’s already under investigationEnglish
411·1 month agoNormally, it makes sense to allow companies to certify their compliance with these types of regulations. It would be a waste of resources to have the government inspect every new model ahead of time to make sure they have things like mirrors and steering wheels. It’s not like they can lie on the forms and no one will notice. Nor would a normal car company have any reason to, since they’d just be setting themselves up for lawsuits, fines and costly recalls.
The difference here is that Tesla decided they could issue themselves an exemption from regulations, which is not the same thing. They want to declare the car street legal without including basic items mandated by law. Other companies making self-driving cars that wanted approval for models that lacked required equipment got exemptions before they launched their models. Tesla just said “it’s fine, we gave ourselves an permission” without even consulting NHTSA.
But that’s pretty much the way Tesla operates. They have a long history of ignoring laws, lying to regulators, withholding evidence, and generally acting like they can do whatever the hell they want. It’s been backfiring on them a little in more recent years, but not nearly as much as it should.
And searchability. There are so many posts that I can’t find later because the title is completely unrelated and the actual memorable content exists only in an image.

8·3 months agoOf course, China was never the problem for him. When he made allegations of Chinese election interference he wasn’t targeting China, he was targeting elections.

6·3 months agoI used longitudinal distance because I wasn’t 100% certain if the measurement for Chile is measuring a line between its two furthest points or just the distance between it’s northernmost and southernmost latitudes. If it’s the latter then it’s a fair comparison, and if it’s the former then Chile gets an unfair advantage but it doesn’t change the result.

25·3 months agoYes actually. Chile is 2,653 miles long. The longest longitudinal distance in the continental US is 2,802 miles.

11·3 months agoA deal which is basically worthless. The next administration can ignore it and the most Trump can do is sue. And that negates the whole point of the deal which was to avoid needing to defend the scheme in court. Since the deal is legally indefensible, he’s very unlikely to win that case.

politics @lemmy.world•Supreme Court rules that broad cell phone location data sweeps require warrantsEnglish
2·3 months agoIn dissent, conservative Justice Samuel Alito said he would have found that no warrant is required, calling the ruling an “irresponsible escapade” that the court should never have agreed to hear.
He accused the majority of “striking a pose as a great champion of privacy in the digital age.”
And he says that like it’s a bad thing. What an asshole.
Not really a surprise, but worth pointing out anyway.

“We’re going to allow the execution to go ahead as scheduled next Thursday. But it’s OK, because we’ll have a hearing on the case in 3 months”
